Grace Rhoades Dean ( 1878-1968 )
Artist, Grace P Rhoades was born in Cleveland , Ohio in 1878. The 1904 City of Cleveland Directory listed her as an artist and shows her living with her mother. Four years later, at the age of 30 she married James Ernest Dean (1871-1933) who was also an artist. Both were painters, printmakers and teachers. Grace studied at the Cleveland School of Art under Kenyon Cox and at Ipswich , Ma. with Arthur Wesley Dow. She continued her studies in Munich, Germany when she travelled there with her husband in 1910 and returned four years later.
She exhibited widely throughout the United States . Her venues included the Pennsylvania Academy of Art, and the Toledo Art Museum among many others. She won numerous awards for both her watercolors and her prints.
In addition to classes at her home ,Grace taught art at Scott High School in Toledo , Cornell School in South Bristol, Me. and the Toledo Art Museum. In an article in the Toledo Blade newspaper in 1956 the artist provided instructions to create linoleum block Christmas cards.
